Tardive Dyskinesia and Abilify?!

Question: Tardive Dyskinesia and Abilify.?
I was wondering if anyone out there has any tics related to tardive dyskinesia(sp).? Im getting concerned. I started taking Abilify 10mg over a week ago, and I seem to be getting a few annoying symptoms. I am biting the side of my tongue and rolling it around in my mouth and then sometimes sticking my tongue out of my mouth in a rolling gesture. And just today I have noticed teeth/Jaw grinding.

I really like the Abilify and feel more like myself now then in a long time. What meds are out there to treat TD.? and are the TD symptoms life long if I continue this medicine.? And also is there any other medicines similar to Abilify but dont include these side affects.? Any information will be helpful... Thanks in advance...Health Question & Answer

It could be anxiety for one, but TD always justifies immediately contacting your prescribing doctor and getting his opinion.

Atypical Antipsychotics rarely cause TD - and I do mean rarely. The first case of it with Abilify was reported in 2006, quite some time after the drug had been released. Since then, there's been a scant handful, and given the fairly widespread use of the drug, that's quite reassuring - Abilify's also been used to reverse the symptoms of TD in some people - it's a very out of the ordinary drug - but because of this it also means you're not likely to find another one quite like it. Geodon, maybe, but Geodon is rarely used due to being one of the last atypicals to come to market. I can't offer any specific info on it, because I just don't know much.

It is worth noting, that among the dozen or so cases of TD on record with Abilify, in every single one of them symptoms stopped when Abilify was stopped. This is not usually the case with TD caused by the older antipsychotic drugs like thorazine - when they cause it, it tends to be permanent.

Get looked over by your prescribing doctor - that's the only person who will be able to give you good advice on what to do here, or evaluate your situation.Health Question & Answer

If you think you are getting TD, get off the meds immediately (but see your doctor before you do this). You can't fix TD and it lasts the rest of your life. It's very serious. This is why doctors should be more careful with these meds.
But you may not be getting it, these are common side effects of the medication. They are pretty horrible, which is why people don't like to take the meds.
Talk to your doctor.Health Question & Answer
