Question: What causes an imbalance of serotonin (mood disorder).?
Assuming that a person is not genetically predisposed, how does stress affect serotonin level.?

Does past experimentation with substance permanently alter the balace.?

Is Mania caused by Serotonin excess.?...how can a person have both too much and too little.?

Increasing serotonin thru the use of medication makes many depressed people feel better, and does cause mania in vulnerable people (read that bipolar) but that doesn't mean a low level of serotonin is the CAUSE of depression. That idea has been disproven, it is far more complicated than that. There are over 150 neurotransmitters discovered in the brain, and researchers know a little bit about like 4 of them. It will be a long time before depression or bipolar disorder are understood.Health Question & Answer

I don't know of anything that has been found exactly why a person's serotonin levels flucuate, but I imagine a person's environment would have something to do it, possibly certain undeveloped skills too, like how to cope. I'm sure stress over time has something to do with it too. I'm not really sure though. I'm sorry.
