The danger is that you steer the doctor into sending you to the wrong specialist.
eg. You have numbness on the side of your face. You think the worst that you may be having a stroke. When the numbness continues for two weeks, you think you have MS. So you go tot he doctor and are refereed to a neurologist. Everything comes back normal. You then ask to be sent to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist because you are getting earaches. Everything comes back normal. You are labelled a hypochondriac while still having pain.
The real diagnoses was a wisdom tooth coming in pressing on your facial nerve and mimicking ear pain. All you needed was to get that wisdom tooth pulled.
Some people can't give an accurate medical history while in pain. It's up to the doctor to ask when did this all start.Health Question & Answer
