Question: Im pretty sure my step-dad has paranoid schizophrenia..how can i get him to get help.? serious answers only.?
Hes been my stepdad for more than 13years..a very good man..more of a dad than my own..well a couple weeks ago the family was sitting around and he started tell me stories from before he met my mom. about him at one point being in a mental hospital for setting himself on fire because the devil had told him to.I was shocked..they kept it from me bc i was younger and he didnt want me to b scared..which was a good thing. Hes normal to me..hes been thru alot in his life that would have made anyone crazy i guess. well here lately hes been saying that hes been thinkin about suicide and the voices seem to b creeping back in..Im really scared..I want him to get help but hes afraid theyll admit him into the hospital again an he wont b able to take care of his mother..which we could help with but He thinks its all his responsibilty..i just dont want him to do anything thats gonna hurt him an us..I kno this is long but i would like some suggestions as to how h to get him help without him getting defensive. BTW--he was diagnosed along time ago with paranoid schizophrenia and took medication but he stopped an was doing fine until recently.?Health Question & Answer

My boyfriend's aunt has this as well. As long as she takes her medications, she does alright. She lives with her parents and they kinda take care of her, since she can't really work or anything, though.
So I would say he needs to get back on medication. Tell him that you guys won't keep him in a mental hospital, that you will take care of him.Health Question & Answer

...tell your mom.
...tell his parents.

youre going to need that support.
if he has to take care of his mom he needs to be fully mentally with us.
you may not be able to convince him to seek help, because he may not think anything is wrong. alot of schizophrenics like to hear their voices and dont recognize the paranoia as being anything but normal.

or call an ambulance if he gets bad.Health Question & Answer

Try to support and encourage him the best you can. Unfortunately, you cannot force him to take his meds and try to get well. He will be defensive because he is scared. No one likes to admit they need help and feel out of control. You may want to encourage him to seek therapy or find a community support agency or doctor or family member that could encourage him as well. You don't want his behavior to get out of hand and him to do something he would regret due to one of his paranoid episodes. Good luck and do the best you can to help him!Health Question & Answer
