Question: What did you feel when you were first diagnosed.?
I was only officially diagnosed recently, but have known something was wrong for years.

I have GAD, Emetephobia, and OCD features.

What did you feel when you were first diagnosed, and what do you have.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I had panic disorder for years before it was diagnosed. My first reaction when I was diagnosed was incredible relief...that my problems had a name, that treatments were available, and that there was hope for the future. Basically, chemicals were misfiring in my brain, causing fear in even the most basic situations. I was first put on basic tranquilizers, but I quickly got addicted to those, so I don't recommend them. Eventually, antidepressants did the trick (they act on the the same chemicals that cause other mental illnesses). I also had some cognitive behavioral therapy, which involves replacing a set of repetitive negative thoughts with more realistic ones. I also recommend the book "Full Catastrophe Living." Just be patient and persistent, and you will improve over time. You've lasted this long, so you can do whatever it takes to get well.Health Question & Answer

Relieved. I'd been having problems for many years, and my parents didn't take any interest nor did they listen. They would take me to shrinks and the like but I would only see them once or twice, and never see them again.
I was in and out of the psych ward after I left home but no one gave me a diagnosis. It was always depression and they would keep me in the hospital for a few weeks, dose me up on meds, and let me go.
It wasn't until I was in my late twenties that my then-shrink told me that I had Borderline Personality Disorder. I am still in treatment, but that should be over soon.Health Question & Answer

I felt relieved that there was actually a name for my problems. I then didn't feel so alone after I found out that many people have what I have.

I was diagnosed with OCD when I was eleven and major depression in November 2008.Health Question & Answer
