If you think there are more today then why do you think that is.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I don't think that's true. But 20 or 30 years ago, therapy wasn't as socially accepted. Now, going to therapy doesn't mean you're crazy or depressed, it just means you're a teenager.

I think more teenagers are open with their feelings, because in this society it's as if teenagers are supposed to have some sort of problem.

Edit: Daisy Sue Marie, you realize that in the 80s, teenagers still had to worry about school, jobs, college, extracurricular activities, friends, boy/girl friends, money, driving, etc...

It's not as if the new millennium hit and all of the sudden teens started going to college and making money. And, oh, it's 2000, we're suddenly attracted to boys! Lol.Health Question & Answer

Taylor,

No, I do not think that there are more depressed teens these days. I do think that the identification, diagnosing, and actual treatment of teens has improved.

Depression was not even really addressed in adults until the late 50s and 60s. Valium was one of the early treatments, and even then the professionals did not do all that much effective treatment.

I really think we have come a long way as a society to deal with this and other problems of people. Of course, there are still many people who feel that these problems are mere figments of imagination and think that the affected people have some sort of character or moral flaw. Thankfully, these people less and less of the whole population.Health Question & Answer

Yes, there is a definite larger amount of teenagers depressed today than there was 20-30 years ago. The reason is that teenagers today have a much higher level of stress that they have to deal with than teenagers of 30 years ago. Teenagers now have to worry about school, jobs, college, extracurricular activities, friends, boy/girl friends, money, driving, etc... There is so much more that teenagers have to deal with than 30 years ago, it is not hard to understand how a large amount of teenagers get to stressed out and become depressed.Health Question & Answer

Nope, it's just more acceptable now than in the past. 20 to 30 years ago they institutionalized depressed people. Who would want to admit a problem when they are aware of the lack of care and what could ultimately be their destination. So sad!! I am glad people are getting the help we have now!! Frustrating as it is!!Health Question & Answer

Maybe, but there also wasn't as much technology and treatment that we have today, so most likely 20 to 30 years ago there were people living and walking around with depression who didn't even realize it. There could be more, I just think there are more today because depression is a getting to be very recognizable than it did 20 or 30 years ago.Health Question & Answer

It's more acceptable to have a mental illness today so it's not as hidden. The amount of depressed people between then and now is probably around the same.Health Question & Answer

Yes, because the population is more.Health Question & Answer

Definitely.
And I'm not sure why, maybe because teens used to work more and had less free time on their hands.Health Question & Answer
