Question: I have bipolar disorder and not sure if i should quit college or work or both. im torn between the two.help..?
I am 18 years old and was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I work at Long John silvers part time and also attend college full-time. I have only been on medicine for about a month and I am getting very stressed out and working is starting to seem really hard for me. I am registered with the office of servcices for individuals with disabilites and they are helping me do better in my classes. Any advice would be dearly appreciated.Health Question & Answer

If you continue college you will be able to get better jobs with better pay= a more comfortable life. Although being bipolar will and probably has affected some aspects of your life, do not let it hold you back from achieving your goals. Your college campus might offer free therapy sessions or services that can help you better your mental health. Use your resources and kick some academic ***.Health Question & Answer

an idea may be for you to find some work-study job on campus
often colleges will have some easy-ish jobs available for students on campus, low-strain, understanding that you're also taking classes
a private business such as LJS doesn't really care about your college education - otoh the college does

ya- i was school full-time also, and working nearly full-time through school too
it really sucked - i got a degree, but in retrospect, my college years pretty much sucked hard - i would say that i hardly had the 'typical' college experience

worked my *** off and was struggling constantly

but still, in the end, they say a college education will get you much further in life - although i still haven't seen those results, 10 yrs after graduatingHealth Question & Answer

I'm BP as well, seven years, and have personal experience with this. If you're going through problems, adjusting to meds and having to go to doctors a lot, QUIT COLLEGE. Everyone is saying it's the most important, and they are right-- but if you relapse or have an issue in college, that is your grade, that's your transcript. That's permanent. If you mess up at a job, you get fired and can move on. Getting fired goes on your record as well, but I guarantee you failing a class is much worse in the long run than getting fired or quitting a "for-now" job that does not affect your future career.

ETA: I do not mean quit college forever, I mean setting it aside while you get your **** together and going back once you're adjusted.Health Question & Answer

Quit your job. Let your college help you get things straightened out first and then if you need the money try to get a job on campus like in your student center/book store/library...those potions work very well with your schedule and often provide you away to study while you work. Don't let your bipolar disorder control your life...you can get through it. It'll be hard but in the end when you have that degree it'll be well worth it.Health Question & Answer

College can be very stressful at times. Would your college and professors give you all the support needed if your condition gets worse.? Try not to overdue and take too many difficult courses. Perhaps taking art or classes that you enjoy right now, if you can, until you feel more comfortable to take harder courses. You have to be able to concentrate in college, so you have to feel good. Take it slow.Health Question & Answer

Stress often makes symptoms of bipolar worse. Try to avoid as much as you can. If you don't feel like you can do both, decide which is best for you. If you stay in college, select a career that has limited stress. I did not do that and I can't work in my field any more. It's just too stressful and really effects my health. Good luck.Health Question & Answer
