Urges to eat chalk and sand?!
Question: Urges to eat chalk and sand.?
This may sound reallllllyyy strange, but I randomly get cravings to eat sand and/or chalk. Ive been having the sand cravings for 5-6 months now, and chalk cravings for the last couple of weeks. Ive never actually eaten sand or chalk. However, if i came across some, I would definantly try some. Warm sand sounds the best! These cravings are completely random, and happen on average every few days or so. What should I do; why do I crave strange stuff like this, why not something like chocolate.? I am not pregnant either. I'm 16.Health Question & Answer

I was getting almost uncontrollable urges to eat sand and dirt, too.
It's definitely pica- specifically geophagy, which only involves eating non-food items that naturally occur on Earth.
It's a mineral deficiency- usually the minerals a person with geophagy lacks in are phosphorous, manganese, magnesium, zinc, and iron (the most common). Take a multivitamin! Try one that is specified for women. I have been taking one for about a week now, and the cravings are already dying down. Try to eat more healthily and eat foods rich in iron. You don't really need to see a doctor right away unless the multivitamin doesn't help at all. But if you feel tired and you're getting pale, it's likely you are anemic and should see a doctor.Health Question & Answer

It is possible that you have some sort of mineral deficiancy. Take a multivitamin. Most importantly talk to your parents about it and go and see a doctor. The doctor should take a simple blood test and recommend the correct medication.Health Question & Answer
