Question: Am i no longer in control of my emotions.?
I have always been one of those persons that keep their negative emotions to themselves. Be it sadness or anger i'll never show it in public.
Lately a friend lied to me about something and i got so mad at him i wouldn't speak to him. this has caused me to think about that decision a lot but i know it's not only that that is keeping me angry. But i don't know how to treat it ( i don't cut myself or use drugs) and sometimes when i'm alone i get really angry remembering that.
and sometimes i fear i'm going mad

I had a psychiatric nurse tell me I had to learn to control my emotions. When I asked a psychologist how to do this he told me no one can control their emotions. Emotions just spontaneously happen but you can control what you do in response to them. You, by not showing you are angry or depressed in public are not controlling your emotions but controlling what you do in response to them.

In the case you cited where the friend lied to you and your anger emotion rose up. You controlled what you did in response by not talking to him. But you also kept thinking and reliving the facts that caused the emotion to well up and sure enough it continues to well up. What you have to do to stop this is to stop reliving the incident. I suggest forgiving him verbally and from your heart if what he lied about does not immediately effect you detrimentally. This will help you stop reliving the incident and help quell the emotion.
