how can they stop.?Health Question & Answer

Maybe it's comfort eating and it has to do with chemicals in the brain. Sometimes when people are depressed they start craving certain foods, usually carbs, which will make our brains happier for a little while. Of course, depression can also cause some people to lose all interest in eating. If your sister gets some help for the depression (or let's it run it's natural course), she may stop wanting to eat so much. Then again, depression meds can increase appetite (they might not, heck, they killed my appetite)...it really depends on the situation and the individual.Health Question & Answer

It can be a variety of things - emotional/stress eating, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa. The eating is a coping skill for her, it numbs her feelings and distracts her, takes her to a different place. It all has to do with chemicals in the brain and is a mental illness that definitely needs to be acknowledged. Talk to your sister about it and make sure she knows you are concerned. Maybe suggest some family therapy for the two of you and individual therapy for her. Hope this helps, email me with any questions - avrilrocks82@gmail.comHealth Question & Answer

When depression gets deep enough, eating or food becomes the only pleasure in their life. This is what is known as "comfort food". It supposedly comforts the person during this "bad" time. However, what usually ends up happening is that they gain weight and get more depressed. "Comfort food" isn't at all what the name suggests.Health Question & Answer
