I have bad dreams every single night. How can I stop them?!

Question: I have bad dreams every single night. How can I stop them.?
So I'm 26 and I'm so sick of having bad dreams every night! I don't think I really had this problem in college, but for the past few years I can't remember a single night when I don't have a bad dream. I never have good dreams. Some start out good, but then bad stuff happens. Last night I had a dream my husband was cheating on me (he never has or anything), some nights I dream my dog is dying, some nights I dream I'm screaming at my mother, some nights I have that "I'm caught somewhere without a bathroom and have to pee" dream, but I also have awful dreams about being chased by murders and everything else...

So yes, I'm a very anxious person in general, and I am not a deep sleeper. I have worse dreams when I am stressed out, but even when I am totally not stressed out I have bad dreams. I try to calm myself before bed and read or watch funny TV, but nothing really seems to work. I could have a totally awesome and relaxing day, and then have a nightmare all night long.

I don't really believe that dreams mean anything, so that doesn't concern me. Still, I am sick of having bad dreams that cause me to wake up even more stressed than I was before I went to bed. also, this can't be restful. What can I do.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Write down your dreams on paper, and think them out. Your mind might be telling you something and if you write it down you will have less of a reason to revisit that dream at night... Don't eat too late, and try not to sleep with the tv on... read up on it. My opinion is to not read the dream interpretation books, rather find out what they mean to you.. Books you may want to look up on would be meditation and relaxation... feel better!Health Question & Answer

You might have pure OCD, which involves having unwanted and intrusive thoughts. Check out the ezinearticles.com link below.

don't eat 2 hours before you go to sleep, and try putting a bag of lavender under your pillow to soothe your mind. drink lots of water and if not, go see a doctor!

i have the same problem, although it's only once or twice a week. i have horrible demonic possession type dreams and being in hell, total despair, and the like.not a Christian or the spiritual type either.

anyway, i read somewhere, sometime ago that intense, vivid dreams have to do with diet;usually when you have sweets and/or high blood sugar levels all day or close to bedtime you will have vivid dreams. you should look up the link between dreams and diet. i'm about to right now cuz these effing dreams are disturbing.

aha! just read the others. it is true.Health Question & Answer

Hello

I am exactly the same. Not one night passes without a bad dream, though mine are about ouja boards and ghosts and murderers and dying and things like that. Recently i had a dream and it wasnt scary and i was so happy. What i did was, i turned my bed around until i found a way i was comfortable, and then i stopped having bad dreams all the time. I guess its something to do with being comfortable, but it helped. I also had to make myself believe that

"Nothing is there in the dark, that isnt there in the llight"

Im not sure wether these dream scare you, as they do me. But i have to comfort myself and think of different things while im going to sleep and things like that, because my problem is being scared of everything at night.

So just maybe try moving the bed to facing different ways, think of nice or the good things that have happened to you and keep going until you eventually go to sleep. Fall asleep watching tv. Anything to keep your mind of dreaming while going to sleep.

Hope i helped!Health Question & Answer

I've never had happy dreams personally, but I rarely dream. An increased patern of nightmare could be cause by alot of things, from a change in diet, stress (even subconcious), something new in your life, a physical change (weight gain/loss), or even pregnancy (not to get you worried).

I find that I have bad dreams when I eat too close to bed, normaly and hour or less, or if I've been eating crap all day. I also have bad dreams when I get alot of pent up energy. Try taking a walk after dinner or before bed.Health Question & Answer

I have anxiety and am currently on meds and don't have that problem anymore, but when I did, I would wake with almost panicy. I learned years ago, when I was in my early 20's how to control the dreams-like changing it. Like when someone came at me with a weapon, I'd say-you can't hurt me and it would change the dream. If I didn't like the dream and had to get out, I blink really hard and that does it. Maybe you could take some benedryl before bedtime when you've been stressed out or maybe your doctor can prescribe something.Health Question & Answer
