For those who suffer from depression-do you find eating healthily has a big impact on your mental health?!

Question: For those who suffer from depression-do you find eating healthily has a big impact on your mental health.?
Answers:
Comparing a person's eating habits to that of an anorexics will not answer the question...the human mind cannot be reduced to something like that.

Eating healthy has benefits both mental and physical. Anorexia is a debilitating mental illness characterised by a distorted self image and need for control. Starving ones self does not *cause* anorexia anymore than the mental traits and characteristics of anorexia result in starving ones self; the presence of both of these things existing parralel to each other result in anorexia. Often a person begins by crash dieting, experiencing some trauma or loss or some similar negative experience, which the individual feels is outside of their control.

Eating healthy means feeding the body what it requires to function at its optimum level. The acids, fats, sugars and vitamins a person ingests and absorbs through a healthy diet promote healthy brain function and balanced chemical levels. As well as this eating healthy can produce positive mental attitudes through both maintaining healthy chemical levels AND psychologically through feeling that they are treating their body with respect and care.

Positive actions produce positive attitudes, while positive eating help to produce balanced and stable mineral, vitamin and chemical levels in the body and in the brain.

Eating healthy alone will not eradicate or cure mental illness, but -when used alongside other positive behaviours such as therapy and exercise- healthy eating can help to boost and encourage a person mentally and physically.
Health Question & Answer

Yes absolutely. I know this from bitter experience of having suffered from deep dperession after back surgery went wrong. I was given medication but this did not help me much to recover from my depression however, I found that eating a healthy well balanced diet and a postive state of mind has helped my mental health and aIso know it having a helathy diet has helped with my recovery out of depression.

I recommend the following read: Nutrition and Mental illness. The approach to balancing body chemistry.

By Carl C. Pfeiffer, PhD MD. I found it really helpful though somewhat long winded in places but there is something for everyone in this book.

ISBN 9-780892812264 90000

You may find a second hand copy of this on Amazon give it a try and good luck.

What I would like to say is that I wish more doctors explained how Good nutrition and mental health go hand in hand.

All the best!

Health Question & Answer

I've found that it doesn't really make any difference at all. I've been in hospital a few times, and they have excellent meals there, but I doubt if that helped me to get 'better' My reasoning is that I've been supporting myself for a few years since then, and have quite a poor diet, but I'm slowly getting better .. much better, in fact. I think that developing interests and having things to look forward to help me much more.Health Question & Answer

Absolutely! Maintaining a proper diet combined with sufficient physical exercise and mental exercise has been shown to alleviate symptoms of depression better than any drug on the market with absolutely no negative side effects. Health Question & Answer
