This is a perfect example of one of the 2 features of drugs of addiction, tolerance, which means the longer you take them, the less effect they have, so there is a tendency to increase the dose, the second feature is withdrawal. This means that when you try and stop the zopiclone you will feel worse, irritable and you will have difficulty in sleeping at all.

If these were prescribed drugs, ( a lot of zopiclone is also used as a street drug,) then your GP had a duty to be aware that the recommended maximum 'course' duration for zopiclone is no more than 3 weeks. also hopefully he has not been prescribing 3 a night, as this is above the maximum recommended dose. If either of these is down to him, then he should justifiably be criticised. In fact these pills are so potentially addictive, that patients taking them for 3 consecutive nights will often experience withdrawal if they miss them on the 4th night! Finally doctors who keep up with all the current information about drugs will know that habitual users of zopiclone at best, only get off to sleep 20 minutes sooner and sleep an average of 30 minutes longer than they did pre-medication. Similar results are obtained with most sleeping pills which is why the better doctors virtually NEVER prescribe them!

Especially if your GP is responsible for your problem, but also if you got yourself in to it by buying the drug on the street, you should go to him for help, as you are not likely to solve the problem on your own.

Initially you may need to gradually reduce the drug, this is often very difficult and an alternative is to convert the dose int an equivalent dose of diazepam ( yes Valium) which is LESS addictive than zopiclone, and reduce this dose slowly. Lavender oil has also been shown to be a useful and harmless adjunct when withdrawing from sleeping pills.Health Question & Answer

Um....it sounds like you are suicidal. I mean that seriously. Fortunately for you, its just about impossible to overdose on Zolpidem. You need to see your doctor about why you're taking 30 tablets of anything at a time...

By the way - NEVER do that with tylenol or ibuprofen or you can seriously mess up your liver, and end up needing a liver transplant. Not fun. It's a long, slow, uncomfortable death.

So lesson learned - take ALL meds as prescribed or you can put yourself in serious, painful, and deadly problems.Health Question & Answer

maybe a tranquiliser dart from the vet or safari hunters.?

seriously, ask your doc for trazadone, whenever they gave me benzos or Z class meds i reacted the oppositely and instead of sleeping they made me want to go dancing, more isnt better, different is better. if you take too many they can react oppositely and make you hyper or even make you psycho. dont do it. Health Question & Answer

why would a doctor give you a major tranquililizer if youve just taken 30 zolpidem.?.?

if you have taken that many you should now be seeking medical attention. Though something tells me you havent taken that amount. Your brain is in trouble when you take 30 of them, regardless of whether they make you drowsy.Health Question & Answer

Hope you don't mean you took 30 tablets all at once!!!!

If you did, get straight to casualty.

From the packet:
Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of zolpidem contact your doctor or go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once.

Phew! Glad to hear you only took 3 (wipes sweat from brow).

Yes, you definitely have a problem if you took those and you are still on here and not even drowsy after reading all our posts :) But I wouldn't go down the road to major tranquillizers just yet. They can have nasty side effects, and you could get hooked on them. They would be the last resort.

There are many everyday reasons for not sleeping well:

the bedroom may be too noisy, too hot or too cold
the bed may be uncomfortable or too small
you partner may have a different pattern of sleep from yourself
you may not have a regular routine, or may not be getting enough exercise
eating too much can make it difficult to get off to sleep
going to bed hungry can make you wake too early
cigarettes, alcohol and drinks containing caffeine, such as tea and coffee
illness, pain or a high temperature.

Some more serious causes include:

emotional problems
difficulties at work
anxiety and worry
depression - you may wake very early in the morning and not be able to get back to sleep
thinking over and over about day to day problems.

People have used sleeping tablets for many years, but we now know that they:

Don't work for very long.
Leave you tired and irritable the next day.
Lose their effect quite quickly, so you have to take more and more to get the same effect.
Some people become addicted to them. The longer you take sleeping tablets, the more likely you are to become physically or psychologically dependent on them.
There are some newer sleeping tablets (Zolpidem, Zalpelon and Zopiclone), but these seem to have many of the same drawbacks as the older drugs, such as Nitrazepam, Temazepam and Diazepam.

Sleeping tablets should only be used for short periods (less than 2 weeks)

You could think about a technique called cognitive behavioural therapy which has been shown to be helpful. It involves looking at unhelpful ways of thinking that can make you more anxious, and so interfere with your sleep. You get referred by your doc.
