I've had problems with the sleeping pill Halcion, should I tell my psychiatrist to I might need something new?!
Question: I've had problems with the sleeping pill Halcion, should I tell my psychiatrist to I might need something new.?
He is retiring soon, and I am paying cash so he is still seeing me. He gives out month long prescriptions for Benzo's, and I originally asked for Ambien which is non narcotic anyway.
Halcion also lowers my libido. And having a four week supply, and seeing him five weeks later with no hope of calling in early (I tried) doesn't help me any.
I tried to make it last, and it still ran out. I only got 2 and a half hours of sleep last night. So I had to cancel going to class, and sleep all morning. I do have insomnia. I usually only sleep 4 hours a night without any sleeping pills.
Do you have any recommendations on a good sleeping pill that is fairly safe.? And Trazadone I tried, and did not like. Thank you Health Question & Answer

Most sleeping pills become ineffective over long term use. I know that this doesn't really answer your question, but for long term cure of insomnia the only thing that really works is behavioral changes/training/biofeedback.
I know that biofeedback works really well to relax you and you can fall asleep easier that way.
I don't think that you should ask for any additional medication, especially since he is retiring and will be unable to adequately follow you. I think that you should ask for a referral to a biofeedback specialist or maybe a sleep specialist. If he doesn't know anyone in particular, biofeedback specialist can often be found in pain management clinics.Health Question & Answer
