It's a normal reaction to feel scared, anti-depressants take a couple weeks to kick in so that is why they want you to come back after 4 weeks to see if it has worked for you. I am a firm believer in counseling when on anti-depressant medication or medication at all. It's important that you don't depend completely on the medication but you also learn to deal with the effects outside of taking the medication itself. It would help you through this process, especially dealing with the fears and anxieties that you are experiencing right now. From what I know Prozac is one of the most affective anti-depressant medications with little known dependence (although dependency is also a mental state of mind) - and all drugs have side-effects it's protocol to name them for ethical reasons.

Take a few deep breathes and try and calm yourself down a bit, take the advice of the "real doctors" and if you want proper guidance see a psychologist/psychiatrist who could give you the piece of mind you need throughout this process. Remember most mental health professionals have your best interest at heart, and it's your life we're talking about here so you need to be comfortable with the decision to take the medication - wait a few weeks and you would see the difference.

Don't stress too much.Taking an anti-depressant isn't going to make you suddenly "whack out" or change completely. It takes about 1 month for the medicine to really work. Keep taking it like you are suppose to. The things you should notice are a calmer feeling, less anxiety/stress etc. The side-effects are only "might" happens- stop reading them, they are not something that happens and if they do it's just one or 2 that you might have.Health Question & Answer
