Is it still considered "depression" if the symptoms are understandable and/or circumstantial?!

Question: Is it still considered "depression" if the symptoms are understandable and/or circumstantial.?
I've known people w/ depression and they seem to stay in a steady state of sadness and discontentment. Lately, I've had a lot of stress going on in every aspect of my life and I have these depressive spurts once or twice a week. By spurts, I mean that I start adding up everything going on and the negative outweighs the positive and I feel sad, drained and helpless. It doesn't last more than a day (sometimes just a few hours) and I'm back to normal. I know I'm a hypersensitive person due to my ADHD, so I'm hesitant about getting treated for depression. But, whenever I do feel overwhelmed, tired and sad, I'm desperate to make it go away. I also find myself somewhat codependant when this happens and as long as someone is w/ me, it takes my mind off everything and I feel ok. But when something triggers it and nobody is around or everyone's asleep, I feel horrible. Does this sound like depression or something that will pass on it's own.? Should a person still seek treatment if the symptoms are episodic and circumstantial.? Any suggestions or theories would be appreciated. :)Health Question & Answer

Their are 2 types of depression:

1- Clinical depression: witch is caused by an imbalance in hormones in the brain (such as serotonin, etc)

2- Situational depression: witch is caused as a result of living/seeing a traumatic event (example: death of a love one, being robbed, loosing your job, getting a divorce, etc.)

Some people are able do deal more easily than others when faced with stress and some are more sensitive (like you've mentioned of yourself...) It's "normal" that you feel worst at night, when no one is around... cause you can't keep your mind busy on all the commotion their is during the day and the silence of the night makes your thoughts wander of and then you start over analyzing and stressing over events that happened in the day...and that is usually when you start depressing.

It sounds like you suffer from a bit of anxiety also, since you say you feel more secure when someone is with you (codependency isn't the solution...). I think it would be a good thing to mention to your doctor how it affect your every day life. Theirs no harm in it. It's better to prevent than cure. And to answer your question, yes it is ok to seek temporarily treatment even if the symptoms are circumstantial. If the symptoms are effecting you enough in your every day routine, I believe you have reason to discuss this with your doctor.

Hope I"ve helped,
Good luck :)Health Question & Answer

The way i see it depression is lack of motivation ... need to motivate your self .... negative thoughts can cause depression so positive thoughts can take depression away ...do stuff that will motivate you ...for me i find working out helps a lot ... im a medical student and recently found out too much suger or simple carbohydrates also cause depression also take b12 and a multivitamin ... do not take meds except as a last resort Health Question & Answer

it sounds like depression that is situational rather than the type of depression that comes out the blue for no reason which is usually chemical.

i don't think you should rush to get anti-depressants but def seeing a therapist/counselor would do you the world of good. you could learn how do deal with it better, how to cope when it is triggered and no one is around. there is no shame in seeking help from a professional.

Yeah, like if someone dies.?Health Question & Answer

No! With any luck at all I will be an LPN ( Licensed Practical Nurse) I definitely DO not feel that depression is something that is circumstantial. Most truly depressed people ( in my opinion) that require medication cannot tell you what is wrong. There is just a melancholy feeling and everything is wrong and nothing is wrong. I "hope" you understand what I mean. They cannot attribute it to any specific factor. I also would not be too quick to get yourself signed up with a medical "label" I also would not be too quick to get yourself linked up with a medicine that may have so many side effects that we do not even know all of them .Maybe if you do not live in a sunny place you suffer from lack of vitamin D from the lack of sunlight during the winter months. Vitamin d by the way cannot be artificially manufactured successfully. It is naturally occurring. So you are right that "they stay in a steady state of sadness and discontentment"Health Question & Answer
