Question: Can having a serious mental illness such as depression kill you.?
I know you can die by suicide, but for example, me, i have major depressive disorder with psychotic features, anxiety, insomnia, irritability and paranoia. I was reading that having depression alone can shorten your life do to the toll it takes on your body, since it affects your whole body.
Ive also heard it can cause you lots of heart problems, even heart disease and heart attacks. What else can it cause, or how else does it affect you.? and by me having these different complications, is my life shortened already.?Health Question & Answer

I was diagnosed with MDD about 4 years ago, and I was told the same risks. Over the past year, my life has changed alot and I've gotten alot better with it. If you can overcome it, becoming a happier, healthier person, you can turn it right around. Being in a state of depression means you are in a state of distress which can take a toll on your heart - especially on your heart. PPL with mental illness also suffer from a weaker immune system thus are more susceptible to infections.

probably yeah, it can't be healthy to be upset all the time. I'm sure it takes a toll on you physically as well as emotionally.Health Question & Answer
