Is it a mood disorder?!

Question: Is it a mood disorder.?
i'm corncerned about my sister, she's 17 now but she's starting to show alarming behaviour... i can remember since she was a little girl she always threatened to kill herself and pointed the knife towards herself, she use to steal stuff from the local store when she was 8 and she killed a puppy by stepping on it several times and then afterwards saying sorry over and over, its kinda scary actually for an 8 year old... she started cutting herself at 12 and still does, her arms look like a chopping board... she always have had trouble with comunicating, she burst into tears a lot in class because she became overwhelmed with something she cant handle, like plays and simple tests.. she had bulimia at 15 and her eating habbits are constantly changing, she's got even lower self esteem now and she still struggles comunicating with people, she's always the quiet girl, she complains that she cant think of what to say when she's around people because she gets really nervous, she has done several drugs since she was 15 and now it looks like she's becoming addicted to pot but my parents caught her on drugs at 16 so she quit all except for pot and painkillers, she smokes several times a day, but she was like this before she started doing any drugs... she's obsessed with suicide and death, she draws and writes a lot about it and wears all black, her appearance has changed, she only makes herself look good when she goes to her boyfriend but when she's home she lets herself go, she cries a lot for no apparent reason and usually when i see her she looks so sad.. she's also sometimes awake for two days straight, without doing drugs.. she has these strange mood swings, she'll go through a full month of loafing and sadness then she'll change to a sudden hyperactive mode, speaking faster than anyone can understand her and speaking the whole time, but then she also doesnt seem with it, like she's in another world, sometimes she gets aggresive or irritable and she gets irrational, picking fights for reasons that seem stupid, she looks like she's screaming silently in anxiety.. but then she'll switch into this slow, sad, angry mood and then bam, she's normal again... this happened over the weekend, she switched between these three moods the whole time... she has asked my parents for help several times, but they want her to snap out of it... my parents are going threw a difficult time, since my dad cheated and my mother has bipolar disorder and she's an alcoholic, they dont give much attention to the kids... my sister is actually a good kid, but im afraid if this goes on longer i might loose her, i need to know whats wrong with her.. is it possible that she might have a mood disorder.? Those are definitely signs and symptoms of a personality disorder, if not several. I'm a nursing student.. not a doctor, or an expert.. so I can't diagnose or anything... But her behavior seems reflect that of Bi-Polar disorder. This disorder is characterized by extreme highs and extreme lows in mood; deep depression, sadness and hopelessness, and then manic, impulsive episodes. Marilyn Monroe had bi-polar disorder. Your sister definitely needs help as soon as possible. A disorder like this will not resolve itself without help from psycho-therapeutic medications, or the help of a psychiatrist or psychologist. You need to do something now. You need to look for resources in your community, and call them and ask them what to do. (Family doctor, psychiatric hospital, teen help clinic etc.) Your sister might say that she doesn't want help, and may try to resist any attempts you make to help her, but don't listen to her. If you love and care about her you need to do what is best for her. Sometimes it is really hard to accept the fact that you have a mental/ mood disorder, and so sometimes people are in denial about, or are too embarrassed to accept that they need psychiatric help. You need to take the right approach in talking to her about this; this is something that you need a professional to give you advice on) but you need to tell her things to make her understand that she isn't alone in feeling the way she does, and that she can get help and be happy. But seriously, if you don't do something she could be at risk for suicide. She's lucky that she has a sister like you who cares about her though. You can email me jenniexxbee@yahoo.ca if you have any questions or anything, and I would be happy to help you. Good luck :)Health Question & Answer

I think she needs to see a professional. Thats not normal behavior.Health Question & Answer

Your sister seems to have general signs and symptoms that may indicate a personality disorder.

Have an open and honest discussion about your concerns. You may not be able to force someone to seek professional care, but you can offer encouragement and support. You can also help your sister find a qualified doctor or mental health provider and make an appointment. You may even be able to go to an appointment with her. You have a loved one who has harmed herself, take her to the hospital or call for emergency help.
If untreated, personality disorders can cause significant problems in your sister life, and they may get worse. So act now!
