If you do hardcore drugs, can it give you mental problems later in life like skitzo or psychotic episodes?!

Question: If you do hardcore drugs, can it give you mental problems later in life like skitzo or psychotic episodes.?
My mom did hardcore drugs all through her teenage years. She is middle-aged now. She has bi-polar and slight schizophrenia. Like temper tantrums and has bizarre accusations. Could the drugs have permanently damaged her brain and caused those disorders.? (I have never done drugs, just to let you know.)Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Well it all depends on the drugs, be more specific, for example LSD can give you flashbacks years after you take it, but yes there is a chance that damage can be done.Health Question & Answer

First off, your mother can't have "slight" schizophrenia. You either have it or not. Given that you say she has Bipolar disorder, the most likely situation is that she has Bipolar disorder with psychotic features.

If that IS the case, it would be unlikely that drugs directly resulted in the development of Bipolar disorder. Drugs are more likely to be the catalyst in the development of psychosis. Individuals who are at a higher risk for developing a psychotic disorder can be have such an illness triggered by hardcore drug use. However, this triggering occurs immediately or soon after a drug use event.

Bipolar Disorder = Mood disorder (can have psychotic features)
Schizophrenia = Psychotic disorderHealth Question & Answer

Bipolar disorder has many symptoms. My husband doesn't have the schizophrenia that can go with it sometimes, but he does have the bipolar disorder. It does cause tantrums(short, sudden bursts of anger with no apparent "trigger") and he does accuse me of strange things that have no basis in reality and that he would never accuse me of normally. He is on meds, but this just controls it, not cures it. I don't think this has anything to do with your mothers past. Bipolar disorder is most times genetic. Don't worry. You just need more patience. I know what it's like,I have been with my husband for 9 years now. Good luck and less worrying. It's not her fault or anyone elses.Health Question & Answer

The drug that does the worst damage to your brain is meth. Drugs can have long term effects. For example they can damage neurons and put, basically, like holes in your brain. So, they don't necessarily cause bipolar disorder or schizophrenia but they can manifest the same type of symptoms.Health Question & Answer

Anthony Spears had a good response. A lot of people with those kind of disorders often do turn to drugs. In addition, a lot of people who do drugs don't necessarily take care of their body's they way they should, and its not the drugs alone that cause the disorders.Health Question & Answer

The cause and effect can sometimes be the opposite. Often times people with schizophrenia or other mental disorders will turn to drugs, so it's hard to say.Health Question & Answer

My uncle was put into a mental institution due to the long-term affects his drug use had on him. He was a schizophrenic bipolar sufferer. Health Question & Answer
