Do you suppress yourself when you are being moral?!

Question: Do you suppress yourself when you are being moral.?
to live decently one may have to control one'INSTINCT AND URGES AGAINST THE SOCIAL TIDE.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Instincts and basic human drives are part of the ancient brain, the Limbic System. Morality is learned behavior, and is a Cognitive function.
In the case of the limbic system, stimuli elicits response.
Cognitive is the intellect, and learned behavior controlling response.
So then if you were raised in a "highly religious", environment morality would be of greater concern, than if raised without religious influence. Health Question & Answer

We all want the same things basically deep down, but we may feel the need to express different aspects of ourself at different times in our lives. You may have to live outside the social norm for a while (many people go to live in big cities so they can feel freer sexually or lifestyle wise) it is better to express yourself for that time, otherwise you will later feel anger that you supressed your needs. If your instincts are not hurtful or criminal then you can express them. If they are, then you may need to talk this over with a good friend or doctor.Health Question & Answer

To be moral is to practice self-control in following a code of right and wrong. This is a display of inner strength, and a guarding of the mind, and a protection of one's reputation.

Suppress yourself.? No. Express yourself as you have decided ahead of time to do.

Choosing to confine one's thoughts and actions to a specific track is what will move you to positive places in life and community.

I'm thinking of a bumper sticker I saw once: "Bad girls go everywhere"
I think it makes the point.Health Question & Answer

Hello,

(ANS) No! I totally 100% disagree with your argument here, No.1 your moral sense, your morality (moral instinct) is developed partly through your individual personality i.e. genetics & partly through learned values & learned behaviors inherited from your early childhood environment, from schooling etc. And finally from messages we get projected at us from the wider society we live in i.e. we absorb at an unconscious level.

No.2 Therefore I would suggest that you have to "suppress or deny" what you know & feel deep down inside to be wrong or inappropriate behavior in order to commit an act of immorality which goes against your true moral instincts & those of the wider society. This is why we have laws which define what is & what isn't socially acceptable behaviors.

No.3 What I worry about greatly in this regard is the more subtle unconscious messages projected by the wider society. For example:- Messages from the culture of the USA about gangs & violence, about so called respect which has little to really do with real respect, about the crassness of bling, about flaunting your money, reality trash TV shows, about the way our electoral process is going i.e. becoming more & more like the US system.

No.4 To be moral IS to be fully in tune with your deeper self NOT the other way around in my opinion.

Ivan Health Question & Answer

Excellent question.
The answer is different for everyone and depends on their experiences to date. eg if you were brought up being told that violence is wrong and immoral but saw lots of it in family life, you might have a subconscious belief that it's actually OK.
In these circumstances a person might need to learn to suppress a desire to behave that way.
If your upbringing was more congruent, this may not be a problem.

If you are suppressing yourself then it's safe to say that the behaviour you want to partake of is something that you want to sort out in your own head so that you can be at peace with yourself.

Good question

Of course you have to supress a lot of your urges, wants,, desires. Even fight tendancies that you naturally possess that can be a daily battle to fight. But at the end of the day that is discipline. That allows you to come out on top of situations and predicaments that could have been harmful to you, sometimes can even protect you. Morals is a good thing, but don't get too carried away with it. I think some people believe themselves to have "morals" in order to be holy or something, practice what you preach----that'll work for yaHealth Question & Answer

What exactly are your instincts and urges.?.?
