Very difficult. It would only work at all if they are on medication and they are stable. Anyone with a mental illness can be difficult to live with, but because of the symptoms of schizophrenia they are the most difficult. schizophrenia patients have a tenancy to go off their meds when they are feeling good or "normal". When a schizophrenia person is off their meds, they get very paranoid and the hallucinations come back quickly. That is why a large portion of the homeless are schizophrenia patients that are off their meds.

Not easy at all but I think it depends upon the understanding and commitment of the partner. The disease is usually manageable, so the difficulties are keeping the person on his or her meds and monitoring side effects. Being a significant other and a caregiver is very stressful and that other needs to make sure she or he takes care of himself along the way.Health Question & Answer
