Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your son's problems. I have taken prozac, paxil and zoloft. All of these are very similar to citalopram (celexa).

I did find one small mention online that celexa can lower blood sugar for diabetics. I pasted that info below in case you want to show it to your son's doctor. This change in blood pressure is very rare, but it does happen.

I suggest that you contact the doctor immediately! The MD will probably tell your son to stop the celexa, although a person usually tapers off the med slowly. However, your son just started the med probably on a small dose, so stopping the med should be fairly simple.

Second, at this time, your son doesn't have to tell his co-workers about being on an anti-depressant. All he really has to say is that his diabetes is temporarily worse than usual and he may need to take a few days off from work.

One last point. WIth celexa and similar meds, many times a person gets the bad side effects right in the beginning. Then these side effects soon go away. It usually takes about 3-4 weeks before the positive effects of celexa start to be felt.

In any case, contact the doctor as soon as you can.Health Question & Answer

Celexa doesn't cause diabetes. It would be a very rare incident if it did.Health Question & Answer
