Can anxiety be an addiction?!

Question: Can anxiety be an addiction.?
I was wondering that if because of the serotonin and adrenalin that anxiety produces can you become "addicted" to over exiting yourself.? I know its not a fun thing cuz I get anxiety too but I was wondering that since many people have depression with it too maybe its the body's natural way of trying to raise serotonin to cope with dispair. I know some people can overcome it by willing the attractive negative thoughts away like you can do with addictions that are more normally thought of as addictions. maybe it is more that just a bad habit. just a thoughtHealth Question & Answer

Answers:
Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.

But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

anxiety raises adrenaline and norepinephrine but it does not raise serotonin. The belief is actually that people with LOW serotonin are prone to anxiety and panic attacks.
And , no you can not become addicted to it, because anxiety is a negative feeling, the body is releasing adrenaline at inappropriate times and the body is reacting to it inappropriately. Thats like asking if you can become addicted to constantly setting your hand on fire.

I dont know where you heard of anxiety and depression raising serotonin because you have it totally the other way around.Health Question & Answer

I'm quite sure that you are absolutely right. I'm sure that I've read that the neurotransmitters employed with these emotions are the same as those activated with the use of heroin or other addictive substances.
One way to break the addiction then is to simply stop doing the emotion and the brain will soon catch up and stop releasing the addictive chemicals. At the moment though, I can't remember where I read it. Sorry.

Excellent question
