How effective is group therapy? Having doubts about methods with my group.?!

Question: How effective is group therapy.? Having doubts about methods with my group..?
For the past few months I have participated in a group therapy.? My reason revolve primarily around relationships.? While enlightening, I am having serious doubts about the methods employed by our therapist.? For example:

The group does not consist of set number of people, or even the same individuals for that matter.? Different people come and go every week. I am the only person in the group not involved within the justice system or needing assistance with addiction. The groups leader strikes me as extremely negative, very situational, and quick to align herself with absolutes.? Granted, this is my condensed "cliff notes" version of that observation, but it is still accurate. Every time I leave our sessions, I am convinced the world is a cruel place, and that we (members of the group) are all blind to the world around us.? I'm fearing poor leadership and poor agendas.Does this seem as though the group is not being conducted properly.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The type of group you are referring to is called an "open" group. This means there is no set # of people, and people are free to come and go as they please. The disadvantage of this type of group is a difficulty in building trust and cohesion. There are "closed" groups which may be more beneficial for you. These are groups that consist of the same people from start to end and no one can join the group once it begins.

A leader of any group should have these goals in order for it to be effective:

1. Should move the group towards a cohesive goal/progress
2. Should facilitate member needs
3. Should remain objective (i.e. not favor one member over another, allow members equal air time to speak)
3. Should make sure the group is making progress and moving towards goals instead of being distracted or bouncing from topics that aren't relevant

You may want to consider finding another group or discussing these matters with your leader outside of the group.
