Is tiredness ALWAYS a side effect of Mirtazapine?!

Question: Is tiredness ALWAYS a side effect of Mirtazapine.?
Hi,

I went to my GP today to discuss my depression and how I'm getting on with being on Prozac (40mg). I told her that I've noticed a real improvement in my mood, but I'm having real problems sleeping. She said if this side effect was going to pass it probably would have by now and that I can either stick with it or try another drug (She suggested Citalopram).

From my work background I know the anti-depressant Mirtazapine is often sedating, but I'd like to know if it ALWAYS is and what people's experiences have been.? My GP's given me another month to decide weather I wanna carry on with Prozac but I may ask for Mirtazapine if I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.?.?.?

Thanks for any replies!xHealth Question & Answer

Hi luv, I was on Mirtazapine for 3 days and all I did was sleep! I took it at night and slept from about 8pm till 10am the next day. When I eventually got up I was really drowsy, and in the afternoon I actually fell asleep sitting on the couch while looking after my toddler!!! I only fell asleep for about 10 mins but it was enough to make me chuck them in the bin, although for those 3 nights it was the best sleep I ever had.

I also found the tablets made me really hungry, all I wanted to do was lie on the couch with the duvet eating junk!!!

I have problems sleeping with fluoxetine aswell, but I need to be alert during the day so I find them best.

Ive never had citalopram, I've had escitalopram, buy only 5mg though so I didn't get too many side effects but I don't think it was too effective either.

Let me know how you get on.Health Question & Answer

I was prescribed Mirtazapine 60 mg at bed time because it helped me sleep. Eventually it stopped working as well so I am now taking Seroquel to help me sleep.
I don't think you can kill two birds with one stone because Prozac is meant to be taken in the morning and Mirtazapine before bed.
I hope you and your doctor can get things straightened out.
Good Luck.Health Question & Answer

Mirtazapine made me extremely sleepy.. I slept for 19 hours the first time I took it.

It is most sedating at 15mg, and the anti-depressant effect works best at 30mg or 45mg. Health Question & Answer

Yes, as does Citalopram.
And both are highly addictive.Health Question & Answer
