Depression for an untreatable condition?!

Question: Depression for an untreatable condition.?
So mentally speaking is it possible to feel better.? I feel like I just soldier on, not truly happy for the rest of my life.

It's not a chemical issue either so I don't know how meds could possibly help.Health Question & Answer

As a psychologist I have worked with many people struggling with depression and an untreatable condition at the same time. I have worked with a couple of people with MS for example who experience their physical condition worsening and feel hopeless and helpless. In truth, these people teach me as much about how to survive and thrive with these two conditions as I help them. I have learned that many times the physicial condition has components that are similar to depression. MS for example has symptoms that look just like depression.

I have seen some of my clients benefit from antidepressant medication, but the word benefit has to be defined in different terms than for people with depression without the medical condition, as a person simply with depression benefits when the depression lifts and they are free of symptoms of depression. This is not the same for people who have another condition that will not go away. One woman described her life as a daily battle against the forces of her condition, and that each day she had to muster up the strength to do battle. Antidepressant medication and therapy helped her to be able to get up and do battle. Group therapy and peer support groups seem to be helpful so that the person doesn't feel as alone and has others who have some idea of what they are going through.

No amount of antidepressant medication, therapy or group support is going to make the untreatable condition go away. That is the very sad part about this. Managing how to keep putting one foot in front of the other, facing the next day with some optimism that the fight will go on, these are things that therapy may help with. As I write this, I am profoundly aware of how much I do not know about you or what you are experiencing, and so am writing in generalities which just seem inadequate. I hope you find as much happiness as you can, can touch the lives of others and be touched by them, and fight the fight.Health Question & Answer
