Where can I find affordable health insurance for my son who has a mental illness.?!

Question: Where can I find affordable health insurance for my son who has a mental illness..?
my son has a mental illness and maxed out of my husbands policy due to his age. He works 15 hrs. a week and his employer doesn't offer insurance for part time employees. We've checked numerous policies on line and the cheapest we've found for him is $800 a month, way more than we can afford. Because he still lives at home, our income is considered as far as government paid plans. We need to find a policy for him but I'm at a dead end. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.Health Question & Answer

I'm in the same position your son is in. I just got fired from my job due to my mental illness and I quit my other one due to this stuff. The only thing I can do is tell you what I plan on doing. I'm talking to my county about getting state health insurance. I'm also talking to my hospitals compassionate care program to get my meds for a reduced price from the drug companies. So I suggest you talk to a county social worker and see what they can do for you.

To the answerer that said that health insurance sucks in the u.s. is right. When I was on insurance through my company my policy only paid for my meds and they didn't cover my psychiatrist visits or anything. So this country is in definite need of revamping its mental health system. Health Question & Answer

I would suggest visiting local mental health clinics in your area. Many people offer a sliding scale based on income and even a reduced rate for medication.

Health insurance is such a costly problem in our country, more reason to vote for Barack Obama :)

But all politics aside, keep trying- there are many agencies who will work with you.

It's such a shame people are denied care based on money.

also, check out local support groups:

I don't know what to tell you. Most independent insurance companies will not cover anyone with a mental illness. Even if that illness is "stable", it stinks, I know. Your only opinion is for your husband or you to get a better job. Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.Health Question & Answer

My sympathies, it sounds like you're in a rough position. I'm very skeptical that you'll be able to find any kind of independent insurance that will be affordable, esp, given your son's medical condition. I think he may just have to get a full-time job, since this should cover the health insurance- there's probably no way around this.

What is his mental illness.? I'm just wondering, because I know how hard it can be to have to work full-time under those circumstances. (I had to take a medical leave-of-absence and almost lost my health insurance. I went from straight A's in college to barely being able to handle a dumb part-time clerical job. And some people still say mental illness isn't real!)Health Question & Answer
