Do you believe certain drugs should be available without prescription?!

Question: Do you believe certain drugs should be available without prescription.?
If someone were taking psychotic drugs or similar, do you believe they should be deprived those drugs because they missed a Dr. appointment, this has happened to a close friend of mine now she's having issues adjusting without her meds and the doctor will not see her or phone in meds until her counselor sees her, but her counselor will not return her calls! (She is a veteran of Iraq, has PTSD and is now Bi-Polar) even if a person did not serve in the armed forces, should they have to continue treatment to stay sane (on medication).?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Treatment of conditions like PTSD and bi-polar disease is very complicated and requires more than medication alone. The medication is extremely important, but it's also necessary for the patient to work on behavioral and cognitive aspects of his or her disorder. This is done through working with a counselor.

There are very good reasons why certain drugs are NOT available without a prescription. The system by which a drug is released to the market is cumbersome and time-consuming. But experience has taught the FDA that when they've rushed some drugs to the market, consumers have suffered. So the FDA is now more stringent than ever.

I assume your friend is seeing a counselor provided to her through the V.A. If this is the case, and your friend's counselor is not giving her an appointment, there are advocacy groups she can contact to help her find a different counselor or to force the issue with her current counselor. If your friend is not keeping her appointments with the counselor and is just insisting that the doctor give her medications, this approach won't work. The doctor and the counselor work together and your friend is a part of that team. She has to play by the rules.
