Do GP's assess you for mental illnesses? Or is it just psychiatrics?!

Question: Do GP's assess you for mental illnesses.? Or is it just psychiatrics.?
On the form I need the GP to fill out it says
"What is the nature of this persons disability.?"

The first box is the one I'm interested about.

It says
Stress
Depression
Bipolar disorder
Schizophrenia
Other psychological/psychiatric

Does this mean the doctor will assess me.?
Because it says up the top "For a General Practitioner or Specialist to complete"

If they access me, what will they ask.?
Try and be specific.
I'd prefer those with experience to answer.

I just need to know because so I won't be so taken back when they ask etc.
It's hard to talk to anybody about this.

It's for counselling.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
They can give assessments. But they cannot really diagnose you. What usually happens is that they will recommend a specialist for you.
Some questions they might ask include:
Have you felt upset for no reason.?
Have you very suffered a serious traumatic experience.?
Do you feel comfortable with people of your own age.?
Do you sometimes have unexplainable thoughts.?
Do you or does someone else have unrealistic expectations of yourself.?
Do you harm yourself.?
For the answers you have said yes to, do they happen not often, often, or all the time.?
Does your emotional life effect your normal every day life.?Health Question & Answer

GPs rarely get more than real basic training in psychiatric medicine. They generally aren't qualified to make a psych assessment. They usually make a referral to a psychiatrist for assessments, just like they would refer to any other specialist, like a cardiologist or oncologist, etc.Health Question & Answer
