I suffer from Night Terrors as well, and I know they are awful! When people compare these to nightmares, only a true night terror sufferer knows the difference - cause if you're woken during a night terror a remember it, it is so much more real and terrifying.

Many researchers believe that when you experience extreme fear (which happens in night terrors), you could have two types of responses. Fight or Flight. I am unlike you, and I have the flight response. I have often ran away from whatever I am hallucinating in my night terror. One time I ran from my boyfriend (who was quickly turning into this evil presence if you know what I mean), and I ran directly into a corner of my dresser. I broke my toe and had a huge bruise.

But you seem to have the opposite response. Fight, instead of flight. I would love to have a friend like you, cause if we were ever attacked you'd fight back, while I'd run away and hide, haha. Anyway, I know this can be scary cause you don't want to hurt your boyfriend. Here are some things that I've done in my life that I find help lower the chances of having night terrors.

1. Sleep on your side - not your back. There is something about sleeping on your back that stimulates the brain more while you fall asleep. You may notice that when you sleep on your back you're more likely to have those types of dreams where you're just about to fall asleep and then you feel like you're falling so you wake yourself up. These don't happen on your side, and you'll have a lot less night terrors like this too.

2. Don't eat directly before bed. I don't know why, but there is truth to if you eat right before you sleep you might have bad dreams, and night terrors too.

3. Don't watch scray movies - or if you do, make sure you don't do it before bed time. I remember watching the movie Jeepers Creepers, which was kinda a dumb movie, and not super scary. But since i just watched it right before bed I had that imagery in my thoughts. I ended up having a really bad night terror where I saw all these figures like the one in the movie floating over me.

4. Find something that is comforting to help you sleep. Perhaps music that you can fall asleep to, or a stuffed animal to hold. I know it may sound childish, but if you have a sleep pattern, or something that makes you feel more comfortable you'll be less likely to fall into a night terror.

If you're still having night terrors look for sleep facilities in your area. Often they are looking for Night Terror volunteers to study and you won't have to pay anything. They may then be able to help you further, and perhaps look into medications if you need them. I would try not to do medications as usually they just give you dreamless sleeps that make you tired all the time. Plus I know its scary having night terrors, but I wouldn't want to give up all my good dreams too just because I'm scared to fall asleep.

Anyway, I hope this helps you. Sweet dreams!Health Question & Answer
