I agree that there is a link between intelligence and depression (having had it for 6 yrs - gone now, fortunately). I suspect they're intelligent enough to see the flaws in society and appreciate the magnitude of the difficulties they face.
If ignorance is bliss, then intelligence and knowledge must be ... well, the sheer hell that is depression, I suppose.
