What are some good coping skills for anxiety?!

Question: What are some good coping skills for anxiety.?
My girlfriend and I are trying to find ways to help her with her anxiety. What are some good skills to help her when she gets anxious.? Health Question & Answer

Herbs can be helpful, if you know exactly what to look for and how to use it, which can be very confusing for someone who doesn't know a lot about them.

Has she tried aromatherapy.? Using scents can help...especially when used in conjunction with meditation or an exercise such as yoga or tae chi (from my experience). Even something as simple as stepping back from the tense situation and taking a walk can be helpful, if it is possible.

If she gets tense a lot, she might need to take a look at her diet. Caffeine can cause a great deal of anxiety, so she may need to cut our coffee, tea (even some herbal teas have caffeine so if she drinks them she should always watch for decaffeinated), and chocolate.

One last suggestion...she could look online. There are numerous web sites devoted to stress relief and relaxation.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

- try and pinpoint exactly "what" is causing anxiety
and remove it; if can't remove it (e.g. job etc.) then
learn to deal with what is causing the problems... hard
to do I know (been there);
- try relaxation techniques - I like listening to various
relaxation tapes/cds
- speak to her doctor about it and hopefully find a
"therapist"
- tell her she is not alone, millions of people suffer
from anxiety
- there are also some good books, free to borrow at
the library

I suffer from anxiety as well. Try going on a walk or staying home. go out for coffee. posting a question on this site is a good Idea. I have met lots of friends who experience the same struggles as me right here. Try looking up the mental health association, they sometimes know where you can find a support group where people have the same condition. I go to Cambridge Active Self Help.Health Question & Answer

It depends on the anxiety but generally it helps to use cognitive therapy, like if she's afraid of driving for instance she can tell herself "millions of people drive everyday, it's just part of life", that kind of thinking usually helps me get over something...Health Question & Answer

if she has it regularly go to the doctor and get meds or see a counselor.
i usually go to the bathroom and sit in a stall to get away from everyone and i take deep breathes. sipping water helps sometimes, use an ice pack on your fore head.

i would see a doctor if it bothers you thoughHealth Question & Answer
