Antidepressant therapy is a bit individualistic. You may lose you appetite while someone else doesn't. Some people may gain weight while others may not. I've never gained weight on an AD, and I've taken a lot of them. As far as how you should feel.? You should start to feel better in 2 to 4 weeks, give or take. You should just start to feel your mood elevate.

As to your BF, you aren't obligated to tell him, however, if he finds out by located the bottle or whatever, then he might be upset that you weren't up front and it shows you might not trust him. Just be honest and assure him that you are trying to help yourself feel better so you enjoy life more. Tell him you may be more fun to be around and a better GF. In reality, the seriousness of your relationship should dictate whether or not it's his business what you take medically. A husband or someone in a similar situation.? Yes, it's important to include them in all decisions like this. You have to make that call yourself. Unfortunately, a lot of men are against psych treatment, but you have to do what's in your best interest. Don't live your life for other people. FWIW, I'm a 33 year old male and have had depression and anxiety for years, but I'm also a psych/med student.Health Question & Answer

I've been on it for about 6 months now. At first I was on 50mg a day and I told my doctor I didn't feel any different. So he upped it to 75mg a day. I also had trouble sleeping, and he told me to stop taking it at night cause it could make me have more energy. But for me that was even worse, so I went back to taking it at night. I am still unsure as it if it's making any difference at all.Health Question & Answer

I took Zoloft for 3 years and it made me feel normal. You do not feel the effects right away, it takes up to 3 weeks. It took about 2 weeks for me. I switched to Lexapro because I could not lose weight when I was on Zoloft.Health Question & Answer

You wont feel the effects for at least 10-14 days. Ive been on it for about two months (50mg) and am feeling less anxious and am no longer down all the time. I also feel better about myself. Antidepressants are not a cure for depression and you should ask your doctor about therapy if he hasn't already referred you to a physiologist.

Talk to your B/F. You guys have been together so long, it sounds like he loves you and would want to support you. Depression is not something to be ashamed of it is an illness.

My shrink said at least 3-4 weeks to feel full effect or sometimes more depends on different body chemistry make up. For myself, i am still losing weight as it gives me nausea feeling and I don't wanna eat. I don't feel sleepy or more energy whatever..(I am taking 50mg everyday). After 2-3 months., I still ain't feel anything about my depressive symptoms and maybe it is not FOR me. LOL You will know when YOU are happy. It takes time. Just tell your b/f about your meds.--> anti-depressant as 1) you are taking anti-depressant, not anti-psychotic so you are NOT f-ing crazy. 2 )if your b/f has anything (e.g.you think is not supportive), you can really see the true face of him. It is common to see shrink and take antidepressant nowadays.Health Question & Answer

Medications like Zoloft will have different effects on different people, but generally it takes several days to notice anything. In fact, you may actually experience the medication by noticing a lack of things -- you're not as upset, you're not as sad, you don't dwell on things as much, etc. Your doctor is smart to start you on a low dose, but you may find that the effects are too subtle to notice.

I would recommend that you get a partner to support you over the next month -- not your boyfriend, necessarily, but maybe a close friend or your mom or someone you can talk to confidentially every couple of days. Tell the person, "I'm on this medicine to make me feel less depressed, and I want you to watch and listen to how I sound and behave over the next month." They'll act as an independent observer, and at the end of the month they'll be able to tell you, "You definitely sound happier" or "It didn't seem to make a difference." You can take this info to your doctor's visit when you talk about adjusting your prescription (or maybe even getting off the stuff).

Finally, don't be ashamed that you're on Zoloft. It can be very useful, and you owe it to yourself and your child to be as clear and happy as you can. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

All anti-depressant meds work differently with each person and it sometimes takes several tries with SSRIs to find one that works for you. It usually takes effect in about a week or so to start feeling the effects. You won't really feel the effects as much as you won't notice your bad depressed thoughts. My mind just doesn't constantly think about bad things when I'm on meds. Weight gain is usually not a factor with Zoloft, at least as much as it is with other SSRIs. Personally, its the best one I've taken but i have friends that took it and didn't like it. Other meds have made me tired but Zoloft hasn't. It doesn't give me extra energy either though.

Definitely tell your boyfriend. It doesn't mean you're crazy!Health Question & Answer
