Yes she is probably still depressed. One of my friends suffers from depression and most of the time you wouldn't notice it at all, except for the fact that she self harms. Even in one of her really down period she can still sound and look quite happy but she isn't.
I just want to point out that just because someone cuts, they aren't necessarily going to attempt to kill themselves. No its not a "normal" way of dealing with problems, and she does need help to stop but its doesn't mean she will try to commit suicide.Health Question & Answer

I wouldn't call depression a permanent disorder or really a disorder at all, it is a debilitating problem but in my opinion it's really just a fairly common state of mind (and a completely alterable one), not a physical issue. The idea of depression is that you're depressed, when you're happy you can't be depressed at the same time. Think about it, it just wouldn't make any sense.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's pity party, All I said was that I wouldn't call depression a disorder, I certainly don't think it's something to be taken lightly.

Please no more thumbs down angry people.Health Question & Answer

When you have depression you feel alone and when you are alone you get more depress. Thus when you are with others and are participating with them you are not alone and feel better for that moment, but when they are gone you go back into depression. It is important to be doing something actively but for now, cutting oneself is not normal, she need help before she try to kill herself. Get her to a doctor and keep her busy. Talk a lot, read books to each other. No many movies sometime they make you more depress, but yes to those that are very funny. Long laughs and walks will help a lot.

In short, yes.

She should see a therpist and/or psychiatrist so that she has someone to talk to privately and maybe get some medication for depression. I've been on anti-depressants since I was 11. But it's much better to take a pill than to suffer.

Some of us (myself included) are just born with chemical imbalances that make it much harder to feel true happiness. But when you don't want others around you to suffer or fuss over you it can be much easier to just pretend around them that you aren't sad. Even when inside you feel like someone has stabbed you and you are dying slowly and noone knows....

I think when most people are sad they cry and then feel better and can come up with solutions. Depression doesn't usually have good do-it-yourself solutions so when crying doesn't help anymore cutting on yourself can feel like some of the relief you have been craving. Cutting is a sign of desperation.

It's sad how many young people suffer, but when she turns 18 it's entirely up to her what her life is like. Life will be what you make it. Design a good life and then live it until it feels normal and natural.Health Question & Answer
