Is this social anxiety or something else?!

Question: Is this social anxiety or something else.?
Sometimes I eat in the lunch room at my work and I start to feel a little strange and nervous. Today I sat by myself at one table and then very close to me another person sat so we were facing one another. We were both eating away and sitting in total silence. For some reason, I felt really awkward. I didn't know whether I should look at the other person, start talking to that person, or what. I tried to forget they were there. I had a magazine and was flipping through the pages but I couldn't concentrate. I felt my heart race and my head was flushed. I started to get a headache.

But then if I was sitting with a friend or co-worker at that same table, when that person came in and sat down, I would not have been as nervous.

Do you guys think this is an example of social anxiety or something else.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I'm a lot like that! If I'm sitting on a bus and a person sits directly in front of me, I feel awkward and uncomfortable. I think too much about the situation and where to look! In these situations I'm not really sure how to act sometimes, that confusion makes us feel awkward. With people that I really know I'm fine, I just find it uncomfortable with people who I'm not very familiar with, like you said also.

I'm not sure if its social anxiety though. I would think being like this is normal.

To the person that said it makes you independant, I'm not sure about that. I'm not independant and I'm this way, lol.Health Question & Answer

I don't believe really in diagnosing just anything, sounds like your just shy, people sometimes freak other people out when there just interverted and to themselves. That isn't a bad thing either, for the most part it means your independent, people like you don't need other people constantly around to make them feel good, sure when you were eating lunch with that other person there was awkward silence but just try to work around that. I would say light agoraphobia. Fear of being in small place with crowd. Not social anxiety. Most people feel akward Stating one question or comment may help break ice. Nice day, etc. Do not need to engage in conversation. You are normal!!!!Health Question & Answer

It could be Aspergers Syndrome. You might be slightly autistic, no big deal. I feel the same way when im in situations where I'm not too sure how to react to people I'm unfamilure with.Health Question & Answer
