My boyfriend has mental problems and might go to jail. I'm in need of some answers. Please help?!

Question: My boyfriend has mental problems and might go to jail. I'm in need of some answers. Please help.?
My boyfriend has severe anger issues and can get kind of abusive(not real bad.) He just has his third strike and was in jail for two months. He was allowed one more chance to fix his problem and also got probation for three years. Well not too long after getting out, he started getting angry over VERY little things, freaking out, having severe panic attacks, overdosed, etc. He gets out of control and I don't know what to do anymore. He also went to Millwood(mental hospital) for a week and they put him on 6 different medications. The police has been called on him twice since he's been out and i'm sure it'll violate his probation and may send him to prison for 3-10 years. Is there any way to let the judge(or whoever) know that jail is not the right place for him and that he needs to get the help he needs.? Like being sent to a mental hospital for much more serious cases until he's back to his normal self.?

I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks!Health Question & Answer

Hi,

sorry to hear about your problem. The amount of help avaliable depends on which State / City you live in.

Some places have alternative sentencing programs for people with mental health issues, Contacting a local NAMI organisation may be able to assist you with identifying any such programs.

also it may help if your boyfriend is currently seeing a pyschiatrist and on a treatment plan.

First make sure that you are taking care of yourself and that you are safe. Next involve someone else, his family, doctor, etc... You can't handle this and it sounds like he is reaching out for help with out knowing what to do.

The important thing to realize is you can be supportive, you can be his girlfriend, that does not mean you can cure him. If he won't go get help for himself call 911 if necessary, but get some help. Good luckHealth Question & Answer

It sounds as though this guy needs help, but you can't be the one to give it to him. He has to be the one to seek it. If he doesn't want help then things will never change for him. Only he can make that decision. Or the judge, if he won't.
Not to downplay the situation, but you need to get as far away from this guy as possible, before you become his target. If you haven't already.

he just has to get a grip but dont think for 1 sekond he will get help. im bipolar and i just got from doin a kouple months they dont give a damn about u in there they give u some meds and throw u in with everyone else espicially if its a anger issueHealth Question & Answer

I don't know much about the law. The best thing is to get him evaluated by a court appointed psychiatrist. He might not want to do this, but it does sound like jail would only make his problems worse.Health Question & Answer

Either get him on Dr. Phil or just get a new boyfriend.Health Question & Answer

Believe it or not if he is out committing crimes because of his anger issues then jail is the right place for him. A very large percentage of the prison population has mental problems and they will get help and medication in prison. He has obviously done more than you are saying because they don't send you to prison for ten years for jay walking. If he can't control his anger then he should be in jail. You should get a new boyfriend, because there are lots of respectable guys out there who will treat you right and stay out of trouble.Health Question & Answer

In the past 20 years jails have become #1 "treatment" facilities for the mentally ill in this country. Community mental health dollars have been cut continuously as we build new prisons and jail. My experience is in FL. Your best hope is to find a place that will take him and he is agreeable to go to. You also need a lawyer who will argue for him. And last but not least you need a judge who is sympathetic to mental health issues who will listen. In FL I would not be very hopeful because typically a VOP is seen as already giving some one a chance and they are non-compliant.

Nationally, there is a group called the Treatment Advocacy Center in the Washington DC area that is leading the charge to decriminalize mental illness. They have a web site and they also have some state affiliate members. That's the best I can do, sorry. Health Question & Answer
