YES! it is horrible and also it can have a longer duration. You were having a panic attack or an anxiety attack. I know how that feels I had suffered from panic attacks alot and am still overcoming, so I know how you must feel..If its happening frequently you should see a therapist to just talk to even if you think you life is alright because these attacks can be caused by a chemical imbalance of your brain. A therapist can determine that and then he/she could put you on a med to correct it. I know I didn't want to take Lexapro at first but hey it stopped them and within a year or so I was off of it and can overcome them if I can tell I am getting to that stage. Thanks to me seeing a therapist
I would not recommend medicine if you can solve this by just speaking to someone and using the tools they can equip you with. This is the best way, but you will need to ask yourself is it effective enough. also, I know how it can be talking to a therapist...I hated it at first but looking back now she had equipped me with the things I needed to overcome this. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....
