Question: Why is there such a social stigma against mental illness in society.?
Answers:
I've had people ask me if they could "catch" my bi-polar/depression from me.(lol) I also think some people are afraid to admit they have a problem them selves because others will feel sorry/bad for them. They also might think that your weak minded.Or looking for an easy out/excuse for bad behavior by saying you have a mental illness. Some people are uneducated concerning the variety of mental illnesses, that they think anyone could just snap and go on a murder spree or something.I think it boils down to the fact that they fear the unknown.Health Question & Answer

Because so many people are afraid of mental illness -- they don't want it to happen to them; and because not very many people truely understand mental illness, that there are many forms and not all are bad or scary, some are just a trial to work through for those that have those issues.Health Question & Answer

People don't understand it so they fear it.Health Question & Answer
