Bipolar is a mood disorder that include one or more manic or hypomanic episodes, elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and usually one or more depressive episodes. Between the manic and depressive episodes, the person may experience long periods of a normal stable mood. In the mania phase a person's elevated mood may be described as euphoric, and for those who know the person, it may be viewed as excessive. Inflated self-esteem ranging from uncritical self-confidence to marked grandiosity and it may reach delusional proportions. In mania frenetic behavior is evidenced by constant activity, pressured speech, and racing thought patterns. Although some symptoms are less severe, some do not experience impairment in reality nor impair the person's social occupational or interpersonal functioning. Some may have unpredictable moods. When bipolar people are in the depressed stage they do not remember the periods of hypomania and information from friends is seen as criticism.Health Question & Answer

I have often had times when others would say they've noticed I could be really upset about something and completely change my attitude in seconds becoming the sweetest calmest person they could ever imagine. So I thought to myself, I must be bi-polar. I did a little research and that guy is right, constant hi's and lows in attitude, thoughts, and behavior. Well, since becoming a christian and learning about being convicted and the power of the Holy Spirit, I completely understand.Health Question & Answer

There are a lot of really simple lists of symptoms on the internet, I can't get any clearer or less scientific than them.

Basically, it's mood swings between extreme highs and lows, often with periods of normality in between.

A person is diagnosed by a psychiatrist, usually after several appointments.Health Question & Answer
