1) I 'm gonna be way into the laymen's term here. Yes, depression can cause self mutilation. Mainly, because there might be a underlying problem or 'secret", that bleeding maybe one's expression of releasing the pain or problem.
2) self injury, I've seen girls actually hurt themselves to try to save a marriage or relationship and tell the partner that someone "beat" them, thus making the mate jealous or mad. Taking them back!

Borderline Personality,that is the major symptom,especially cutting.A lot of times it is just a relife of built up emotion an outlet for the pain on the inside to come out,someone with borderline self hurts not for attention or to kill their self but as a release,it makes them feel better.But It could be other things to would talk to a doctor .Health Question & Answer
