Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

I taught myself how to get over it (and it was severe enough that teachers thought I was mentally retarded in first grade and again thought so in 4th grade, because I never talked. But actually, I am on the other end of the IQ range).

I did a couple of school plays, playing a supporting role. Faced down my fear. I joined the debate and speech teams. Then talking face to face with someone is FAR less stressful, because you already did the worst thing, which is get up in front of everyone. And EVERYONE is afraid to do it - I coached high school debate for 4 years.

also, when in a one to one conversation, ask the other person about their pets or hobbies. They will go on and on about it, and that takes the pressure off you! They will really like you too, because you are interested in them.Health Question & Answer

When I suffered from it I do not think it had a name. It was back in the 80s. I became so nervous around people I could not stand it. I was in high school and it seems that there were a lot of situations where I was around crowds. GAmes, Pep Rallies, and Concerts, and what not. It took years of relaxation techniques to get over it. I finally became relaxed.

Drinking seemed to help, but that only made my grades suffer as I ended up being around partyers.

At any rate, I think if it is SAD you suffer from, talk to a shrink or counselor of some type. Maybe even take up Yoga. I hae found the breathing exercised help a lot.Health Question & Answer
