Im thinking about stopping my medications all together, whats your advice of this?!

Question: Im thinking about stopping my medications all together, whats your advice of this.?
Im really tired of the side effects from the meds and am thinking about just stopping them all together. I now have a permanant twitch from the meds, i still get depressed, gained 20 pounds in 5 months, still have insomnia, anxiety, everything.

im seeing my psychiatrist thursday to talk to him about how i feel, but if he doesnt switch my medications i am going to stop completely. if he does switch them and they dont work, im going to stop them. at least then my twitch might go away and the weight i put on can leave alrady.

has anyone gotten off the pills and been okay.? i have schizo-affective disorder.Health Question & Answer

I don't blame you for being frustrated. I have suffered through side effects of psych meds and it felt like everyone would say 'oh yea you have a constant tremor.? That sucks but there is nothing you can do. TAKE YOUR MEDS.

For me it came to be a decision about which was worse. I would weigh side effects, medication, and the sanity that medication provided. I am always on a search for better options. But I decided I was not willing to live with a 24 hour a day tremor for clear thinking I would deal with the weight gain the meds caused for that clarity.

The big thing is to own the fact that the process SUCKS! It is like any other illness it is painful,demoralizing,expensive,exhaustin... and all in compassing. The good thing is there is light at the end of the tunnel a "normal" life can be lived through the journey of recovery of Mental Illness.

The best advice I can give you is talk to your Dr as you planned. If you do not have a Dr. that is sensitive to your needs demand another one. This process is too hard to deal with an insensitive practitioner.

I wish you the best! A fellow suffer of schizo-affective disorder.

I know exactly what you are feeling. But PLEASE don't stop your meds all together. You need to gradually go off of them, and it usually takes about a month to go off of them completely. I made this mistake before, and I had severe withdrawls, which are 10 times worse then the side effects! I know you just want to feel normal, and if your doctor does not agree to switch your meds, then you need to find a new one! I will keep you in my prayers, and just remember that with the right doctor and the right meds, you will feel normal again! Or, whatever normal is for you and me anyways! :)Health Question & Answer

I can understand your feelings. Without medication the chances are high that you will return to the state you were when you were last commenced on it. See the Doc and see if he can change to something more suitable for you and keep in close touch with the Doc or mental health team and talk about problems when they arise. Ask your psych about a drug called Abilify. Its a mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic. I was on it for a long time. Very few side effects, minimal weight gain, and the risk for something like tardive dyskinesia, the twitching of which you speak, is almost nil.

DO NOT STOP YOUR MEDS! If you are not happy or comfortable with your treatment then discuss it with your provider. If that provider doesn't agree with you, seek a second opinion. But don't stop cold turkey. Health Question & Answer

Hi, sorry to hear what a rough time you are having. I do not know what schizo-affective disorder is but just wanted to say please hang in there until you see your psychiatrist. Tell them all your symptoms and how you feel & that if they can't offer a solution by changing/altering dosage on meds, that you are planning on stopping. I had a very bad experience coming off Seroxat. Many years ago, long before all the law suits against the manufacturer today. I came off VERY slowly, over a long period of time and it nearly killed me , so PLEASE don't stop your meds 'cold Turkey'...
hang in there :o)
hope I helped a little

I agree taking meds is no fun. Especially when the side effects are bad. I'm glad you're going in and talking to your psych. He should be able to change your med. Going off them completely is a different story. The only thing that can happen is your disorder comes back and gets worse. Please be patient while your Dr. gets the combinations right. In the end you'll be glad you did. I've been on meds for 15 yrs. It took 6 tries before we found the first one that really worked. When it was discovered I was bi-polar we had to start adding other meds until we came up with a combination I could live with. It was worth the wait. Believe me when I say I'd love to be normal too. There may still be some side affects but they shouldn't be that severe. It's a sign that the med you're on isn't right. Hang in there it truly can get betterHealth Question & Answer

Yes I did, I was fine lost the weight and everything then I took some cannabis and it brought my psychosis back I was on Olanzapine and stopped for about a month, as I said I was fine until I took cannabis, but and there is a big but when my psychiatrist heard I came off my medication he took me more serious and changed my medication to some thing different.

What I suggest you do is print out your question that you asked yahoo and take it to your psychiatrist on thursday your instructions are clear and the way you feel is understandable.

And find out as much as you can about your new medication that he will change you to.

All the best,
