What do you do with a depressed teenager?!

Question: What do you do with a depressed teenager.?
My sixteen year old son is depressed. He states it is over a girl who is a friend who is moving. I think it is from a build up of stress in his life. I have been encouraging him to go out with friends because he states it makes him feel better. When he is at home he cries all the time. He can't eat or sleep. I took him to the doctor who put him on prozac 10mg and ativan. What else can I do to help him. I have told him we can go visit his friend etc. Just need some advise from others who have been in the same situation. I am worried about my son.Health Question & Answer

i'm 18 and went through a tough and stressful phase in my life not too long ago where it seemed like i was depressed. it wasn't that i was depressed it was that the stress was just getting me down and i had no way to get it out. i started seeing a therapist who i talked to every week and helped me realize why i'm so stressed out and how to fix it.

your son may not need prozac. he may just need someone to talk to. sometimes stress can be very overwhelming and teenagers who are put through a decent amount of stress usually don't know how to handle it as best as possible.

you as a mom can always just be a mom in this situation. this meaning that you should give him all the love and support he needs to get through this. even his dad could help him if he doesn't want to go into full out details with you, sometimes it's easier for guys to talk to guys than guys to talk to girls. show your son that you love him and give him the support he needs from you.Health Question & Answer

hmm, all yoyu can really do is let him work it out for himself, and as for the prozac and stuff, if you son takes them for a long time, it could cause an addiction and probably will. That means that you're son will be incapable of being happy, or at least normal until he takes more antidepressants, or goes through a long painful time without them The antidepressants WILL help, but they end up doing damage as well, unfortunately i had to experience a similar situation..All he can do is visit his friend and work through all the tough issues he has, and hopefully he will recover(most likely).Health Question & Answer

I think that he may need to go back to the doctors so that they can determine what other medication or increases in dose he may need.Health Question & Answer
