If a parent has depression is it more likely the child will develop it ?!

Question: If a parent has depression is it more likely the child will develop it .?
Answers:
Unfortunately, Yes.

We learn alot of our behavior from our parents, including coping skills. There is strong evidence that supports people who grow up in a household effected by grief, anxiety or depression have it "printed" onto them.

That's not to say the *Will* become depressed, they are simply More susceptible to it. Health Question & Answer

There's no definate evidence to suggest that depression is inherited, except with bi-polar disorder. Its normally a number of factors that contribute to a person becoming depressed.

My mother has mental health problems, and I myself have been living with them myself since childhood. I dont believe this is because is biological of factors though, but social ones as my mother was abusive towards me. It was bound to have an affect on my mental health!

I do not believe that the fact that a parent has depression in itself will mean that their child is more likely to. I think I would like to have children one day, but wouldnt do so until my depression and related problems are more under control. Health Question & Answer

I read in one of my psychology books ( cant remember which one) that emotions are contagious. The thing is, if you are not educated enough about the subject, then you will learn the patterns of depression is normal. You will live as if you are, when you just might not be.

Read up on it. Learn all you can about the subject so that you know what is and isn't normal life patterns.Health Question & Answer

There is a chance.

My mother had depression most of her life.

I have had it most of mine, but not as severe as my mother.

My brother, however, has never had depression.

So, only a chance.Health Question & Answer

The tendency does tend to run in families. There are different types of depression, also.
