What can I do to help myself get better from depression?!


Question: What can I do to help myself get better from depression.?
I have been depressed every day for the last five years. I have tried medicine and therapy, sontinued working etc... but no matter what I do I am not getting any better. I have been depressed for years, not just your normal passing depression... along with other symptoms: insomnia, lack of appetite, gruesome nightmares(every night!), and too much more to list here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Health Question & Answer

That is really tough, to have depression for so long. My only advice would be to keep trying. Try another medication, a different therapy. Pay attention to all the little things that do feel good, and do matter to you. I know it won't cure anything, but it may help to make the days hurt less. I know what it's like to have bouts of depression, so I'm really sorry you're going through this, but it's a good sign that you want to get better. Some people don't. I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. Sometimes depression is a very stubborn problem.

Although I'm not an expert, try these things:

1.) Get together with your friends and family, and ask them for support in any way they can give it to you. Ask them to help you identify what exactly is making you feel depressed (unless it's a medical disorder, in which case I'd try to consult a highly skilled professional), and brainstorm potential "remedies".

2.) Try getting together with some friends and/or family to go out on a social event, perhaps some that are out of the norm or just a little different like: jazz/dance club, outdoor movie theater, holding a small and not overly hyper party. Get yourself in some SMALL social events first, and see if that helps; it it does, perhaps try some bigger social events.

3.) Sometimes, if depression is emotion provoked or caused because of something feeling you have (as an example, perhaps, selfishness), go out and do something for other people. Visit others who are depressed and talk to them. Or maybe go visit a seniors home and talk with them and visit different people.

I'm not trying to sound insensitive, but being depressed is nothing but feeling sorry for yourself and giving up on life. It's a choice and if you want things to get better, you have to look at things differently and choose to make the most of it.

Keep trying medications and therapy. Work with your doctor to find the medication or combination of medications that will help you feel better.
Sometimes it takes a while to find what works for you.
Keep going to therapy. Find a therapist that you can connect with.
Having the right therapist makes all the difference.
Keep busy. Try to stay on a schedule each day. Have a plan for that day. Keep in touch with friends. I hope you will feel better soon.
