the argument of nature VS nurture has been ongoing since before Freud, for as many arguments you can get for it being nature (born with it) you can get arguments for nurture (environment). Personally, I think it's a combination... a propensity for it, combined with a lack of proper parenting.

And I agree, I think most teens are "like" sociopaths, in that they are indeed very ego centric... but you know, that is the job of a teen, they need to figure out who they are, and that is an ego centric task. What is worrisome is seeing so many twenty and thirty somethings still behaving like teens.Health Question & Answer

one time i was reading a book. and it had a story in it. the story went something like (only better than) this:

there were two brothers who grew up under the care of their abusive, alcoholic father. when the boys grew up to be adults, the first one became a successful busisness man. the second became an abusive alcoholic, just like his father. when asked why, the first replied that all he saw as a child was his abusive father and so he worked his entire life to make sure that he never turned into something like that. the second said that all he ever saw was his abusive father, and so he didn't know anything else.

this story isn't actually true, but it certainly could be. i think that people who turn into psycopaths choose to be that way. everyone has influences in their life, but it is up the individual to decide what to do with what they're given.Health Question & Answer

i think its just that most people see teenagers as chavs...or gangsters... cos there always out on the street swaering and shouting braap braap or some other stupid word.... if you get rid of them and leave normal people...e.g grebby people and such ... then it will be fine :D

I think the majority do have some sort of abuse in their past. Teenagers are just teenagers. Health Question & Answer

sociopaths and psychopaths are that way because of nurture. the way they were brought up, social influence etc.Health Question & Answer

I think you're referring to an idea which cropped up a while ago. I can't remember the name now, but it suggests that a good portion of todays young population lack many of the morals, ethics and behavioural boundaries of thier parents. It's (supposedly) a form of teenage antisocial personality disorder.

If you ask me, a label given for the sake of labelling. Today's youth face more challenges, dangers and more intense metamophoses than thier parents did, and often require a colder, more clinical view on life to survive these.

Sociopaths are not only formed from abuse. People born with an antisocial personality disorder are referred to as psychopaths. Sociopathy is a learned condition, and comes in different degrees of intensity depending on its cause.

I think most teenagers are far from sociopathy. Teens are typically vulnerable, sulky, weepy, aggressive, frustrated, depressed, in love, out of love - sometimes all within the same week. Whereas a true sociopath doesn't feel any of these things, either by choice or circumstance.

Show me a teenager who is secure enough in thier emotions and themself to fake reactions and bury emotions enough to even *appear* sociopathic. They can definitely be antisocial! But that's a different breed of person to a sociopath.

The true socipath is probably the person you'd suspect least. They make fake reactions because they've learned that these are well received (as will psychopaths.) They are often (but not always) highly intelligent, manipulative, insightful and charming - and many of them live successful and happy lives!

IMO, one of the big problems with todays youth is that they have no boundaries set in place by fear or pain. Without fear or pain, you have no real punishment. The self is never harmed. The stasis is never rocked. Mum takes your pocket money away - annoying, but it doesn't rock you. It doesn't penetrate what you are or make you question what you've done.

Whereas a good sound hiding rocks the balance, it forces you to reevaluate to avoid further pain.

Everybody is so keen to apply a label or a disorder these days. He can't help it, he has socipathic tendencies. Riiiight. What he has is no reason to fear and a bad attitude, that most likely stems from his own feelings of inadequacy and frustration!

That is not a sociopathic mindset :PHealth Question & Answer
