What is the condition suffered by the homeless who talk to themselves?!

Question: What is the condition suffered by the homeless who talk to themselves.?
I've seen homeless people in my city have full conversations with themselves, and seem *totally* cut off from reality. They don't seem to see or hear people in the 'real world' who try and talk to them.
Is this schitzophrenia.? What causes this.? Some congenital defects in the brain, or brain damage caused by booze and drugs.?
Is there a cure.?

Somtimes I wonder if these people ever had moments in their lives when they were 'sane', when they held stable jobs and had families. I hope they can be helped- Society ignores them, they are treated like pariahs and ghosts, and likewise seem to exist in their own reality.Health Question & Answer

It is not only the homeless who talk to themselves, it's just that they don't worry so much about what people think of them, so they don't lower their voices when near strangers. Some may have mental problems but there are plenty of people with jobs who have worse mental problems and brain damage from alcohol and booze.Health Question & Answer

Booze and drugs.? I don't think you meant to be insulting but as someone with a parent with schizophrenia, it was. Many homeless people are on the streets because they are too sick - mentally - to hold down jobs or keep up apartments. It is a problem in the brain. It can sometimes be controlled, but not always. It's a very sad illness. Health Question & Answer

Schizophrenia, I know a lot of homeless people who have this condition as well as many other disorders that used to be a working part of society and for some reason got off their medication and become the "crazy homeless" guys you are talking about. Actually I used to work at a restaurant and there was this one guy about in his mid twenties quite homeless looking who used to wander around the restaurant and the rode talking to himself. He got obviously called on because people were nervous he would walk into the road. He got baker-acted which in turn got him back on his medication. He came to visit the restaurant as a customer this time and I barely recognized him. He was very good looking cleaned up and was a very very normal guy! It's sad that the government ignores people like this and that the public looks down upon them. It's not always drugs or booze that cause someone to be homeless contrary to popular belief! The healthcare in the US is a huge problem and it needs to be fixed!Health Question & Answer

That's schizophrenia and it's not caused by anything it's a born-in mental illness, though it can be exacerbated by drugs or alcohol. Then again, it might be worse w/o drugs and alcohol too. The truth is, most of these people have never enjoyed a normal and successful life, as these things usually spring up during late adolescence. We can only pray for them.

There are drugs for schizophrenics that can work well, but most people don't have the money to buy them or they're too unstable to even make that decision themselves. Drug implants have been developed for slow release just under the skin, but some say that violates a person's right to choose to live healthily or not. Sounds like a dream come true to me.Health Question & Answer

It is probably schizophrenia.

The deinstitutionalisation that started decades ago has put countless mentally ill individuals (indirectly) on the streets.

Schizophrenia is a mental disease that causes people to separate from reality. They do not perceive the world in the same way that you or I do.

We know that high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine is positively correlated with the disease, but no one cause has been determined. Patients often have swollen brain ventricles as well.

About 1% of the normal population contracts the disease, and a statistically significant number of these schizophrenics of the northern hemisphere are born in February (in the opposite time of the year for the southern hemisphere). Schizophrenia can run in families, and if a family member has the disease, other members are more likely to contract it.

Interestingly enough, studies of identical twins show that if one twin contracts schizophrenia, the other has an almost exactly 50% chance of contracting it as well - this leads one to assume that schizophrenia is about half nature and half nurture.Health Question & Answer
