How do you COMMIT someone?!

Question: How do you COMMIT someone.?
Commit as in have them picked up by the psych ward. I deeply believe someone I know should get help that extreme but she won't go willingly. Please help if you have any info or sources that I can use.Health Question & Answer

It is hard these days to get another person committed, even if you are a close family member. It almost has to involve a police/medical situation these days, if you are not a family member. And kudos to the advice about your local MHMR. They are willing 24/7 to send and share information. I know how hard this must be for you. If you actually witness her doing something harmful to herself, or threatening you maybe, or someone else, you could always call the police, explain you believe her to be mentally ill, and tell them why you think she is dangerous - otherwise, there isn't much you can do to get this person committed.Health Question & Answer

If a doctor, a law enforcement officer or another properly certified medical professional determines that the person you think should be 'committed' is a danger to him/herself or to others, they can legally have a person taken to the hospital for psychiatric observation. If the doctor(s) determine that the person is indeed a danger to self or others, the person can be held involuntarily for up to 72 hours. Beyond, that, a hearing will be held and a judge will determine whether the person needs to be detained longer. Contact the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) office in your city or county. They have information to help you make your point to officials about the instability of someone.Health Question & Answer

It isn't hard if you're related to them. Just call 911 and say they threatened to commit suicide.

It won't help her though. Someone did that exact thing to me and not only did I not get the help I needed in the hospital, it just made me more depressed. You can't go outside when you want, can't exercise (if you didn't have weight issues you will now), can't call people when you want, can't watch TV...And on top of it all you don't even get therapy. They just drug you up and send you home when someone who's insurance is willing to pay more comes along.

I ended up worse than when I went it.Health Question & Answer

First, you have to be a family member, such as a parent or sibling. We can't just go around having each other committed. Why don't you ask her to check herself into a hospital for a 23 hour observation so that the doctors can prescribe her some treatment.

Here's the other thing....is she going to hurt herself or someone else.? If you think she is going to hurt someone else, then you call the Mental Health Mental Retardation Facility in your town. You probably should do that anyway, just to get some more information.Health Question & Answer

you cant make anybody go to the hospital, only time you can do it is when the person is unconscious or has tried to kill them selves, than you can call the police and they will commit her.Health Question & Answer

You cant just put someone in there. Unless she does something harmful to herself or others no one can make her go inHealth Question & Answer
