It is not dangerous. What happens is you go to sleep and you stop breathing. The doctor breaths for you when they give you the drugs that knock you out. Your heart keeps pumping so that is not a problem. If you are asleep for a long time they will put a tube in your throat that puts oxygen into your lungs. They also give you drugs that dry up your saliva so you don't choke on spit when you are asleep. Doctors know what they are doing and they will keep you safe. But, it is normal to wake up feeling the way you did because this is not a natural processes that the body goes through. If you woke up and you are breathing on your own then you are fine. I have had GA about 30 or 40 times and I am still alive and kicking.Health Question & Answer

It can be for certain people. Ive heard that some people cant be given it. You then have to get localized anesthesia. I love general anesthesia. When I went to get my shoulder popped back in, they have me what I would only guess was heroin. I actually felt it inside my blood stream. first it ran up my arm, then my shoulder, then my heart, then my body, then my legs. It was freaking crazy. I tried to ask the nurse if I could buy it from her. She said no..Health Question & Answer

There is always a slight risk with GA, that is why the anesthesiologists get paid so well, they have to carry very expensive malpractice insurance. They have to go through a great deal of training to recognize patents that are at greater risk of complications.Health Question & Answer

What you had was probably propofol. I assume it was given in your IV. It's used quite often for short procedures such as your or things like colonoscopy. It's far less dangerous than GA.Health Question & Answer
