I am bipolar and have taken lithium for a while. I've tried other meds and have either been allergic,?!

Question: I am bipolar and have taken lithium for a while. I've tried other meds and have either been allergic,.?
had bad tremors or a lot of weight gain. My psychiatrist wants to put me on Invega, a very new drug, to take along with lithium. I just looked it up on the net before taking and the side effects said I could have a stroke or slurred speech, not be able to drive and possibly have bad hallucinations. Reviews on this drug say they have had all but the stroke. I'm scared to take it! She was going to put me on Depakote, but it can give you just as severe if not worse and possible amnesia. What do I do.? Please help.Health Question & Answer

All side effects do not show up....those are anything that anyone has experienced with it so you can be aware there is a chance.

I am on depakote....have slight hand tremors and some stomach issues (heartburn) at times. But that is it and isnt bad. Those side effects were much worse first few weeks on it and after upped the dose, but then calmed down....most side effects will do that.

Am on wellbutrin.....seizures are a possible side effect....that doesnt mean i have them...or ever will

Listed side effects are just what you need to watch out for....look at somwhere that shows % of people experience those side effectsHealth Question & Answer

Compare the result of the study between the ones on the drug and the ones on the placebo. Often the results are about the same in both groups. What this means is that if people think they are going to have a side effect then they do and it may not have really happened at all. I hope I explained that right.
If this drug is comparable to Depakote then as long as you stay in the therapeutic range you should be fine. This will mean periodic lab tests to make sure you have the right amount of drug in your system.
When taking any drug you have to weigh the risks and the benefits. If the benefits outweigh the risks then take the medication and see if it's effective for you.Health Question & Answer

That's so typical....Give one medicine which causes side effects, then another with worse side effects to counteract that one, then another with worse side effects to counteract that one, and so on and so forth.

These drugs do more harm than good, and in the end they'll blame everything the drugs did to you on your mental health! "The drugs didn't cause any of this behavior...you're just crazy". "This is your fault". Do not trust these doctors OR the drug companies. They are not looking out for your best interests!

By the way, Lithium is probably the least harmful of the choices you gave. Have you tried Omega-3 with vitamins C and D or A (not sure which one). Harvard University did a study on them and it worked so well they cut it short halfway through! You might want to look into that.

Sorry about the ranting, but I watched a life get ruined like this with my own eyes. It wasn't pretty.Health Question & Answer

Be like no I don't want to take that drug. Tell them your concerns. If not that medicine then talk with them to see if they could find a medicine that is going to treat your condition with less serious side effects. I usually don't read the side effects because I know that I will obsess about them. Just talk to your doctor.I am sure that you can find some middle ground. Health Question & Answer

a healthy diet is the best medicine. my doctor is very old school and trusts no pills. i drink water for a whole week or until i feel better with no sodas or caffeinated drinks and im fine after it.

these drugs may help but i dont trust pills that much.

tremors and weight gain does seem a little advanced though. i guess you can ask if there are any other alternatives that are safe.Health Question & Answer

Please relax. Those possible side effects are less than one tenth of one percent. You should be okay,.Health Question & Answer
